Test your bike with the new prototype Bremerton Fast Ferry bike rack
Since launching fast ferry service from Bremerton in 2017, we’ve heard from many cyclists that the bike racks on the Rich Passage-class vessels don’t accommodate fenders, a staple on many bikes in the northwest.
One of the chief obstacles to replacing the bike racks on our vessels is the size and weight restrictions we are required to operate under to minimize wake in Rich Passage. At the beginning of this year, a local bike rider and engineer reached out to Kitsap Transit with a design for a new bike rack that could accommodate a wider variety of bikes while meeting these requirements.
We’ve installed a prototype of the new design at the Bremerton Ferry Dock, and we want your feedback. The prototype – which includes an example of our current bike racks for comparison – is located on the upper section of the dock, just to the right of the elevator.
Due to size and weight restrictions on the Rich Passage-class vessels, these ferry bike racks won’t be able to accommodate every single kind of bike. However, we hope this new design improves riders’ experience on our ferries.
Before you board, test your bike using the new prototype! The design works by hanging the bike by a wheel and locking it into place. Then, scan the QR code on the sign next to the prototype, or visit this link, to let us know what you think.
The prototype will remain at the dock until Dec. 31, 2024.
