Welcome back to Headways!

It’s been a long and busy summer at Kitsap Transit. This month’s newsletter is full of important route and service change information – including the announcement many of our riders have been waiting to hear for years.

That’s right – starting later this month, KT will stand up Sunday bus service for the first time since 2009. We’re very excited about this development, and you can read more about how it’s going to work below.

Our fall service change is also taking effect this month. We’re changing up some route numbers and splitting Route 20–Navy Yard City into two new routes, so make sure to read on for details. Thanks for reading!

1. Sunday Bus Service Returns September 24

At the beginning of 2023, we announced our intent to roll out Sunday bus service in phases across Kitsap County, pending successful operator recruitment. We’re extremely excited to launch the first phase of our Sunday Service plan on Sept. 24.

2. Fall Service Change Begins September 18

Our fall service change begins Sept. 18, and we’re making some significant changes. Read on for details!

3. KT ACCESS operator takes home gold at state Roadeo; maintenance team wins bronze

Kitsap Transit’s employees had a strong showing at the 2023 Washington State Transit Association Roadeo competition this year, with ACCESS operator Robert Floyd taking home first place in the Body-on-Chassis division and the maintenance team finishing a strong third in the Maintenance Roadeo.

4. Behind the scenes of KT’s ferry fleet photoshoot

Lots of folks asked us why our entire fast ferry fleet was sailing together on a Sunday afternoon in August. Well, we have answers!

5. Hiring incentive extended another year

While our operator recruitment campaign is going well, we still need to hire more operators to restore service cut during the COVID-19 pandemic and expand service. That’s why we’re extending our $7,000 hiring incentive for another year.

6. A History of Transit in Kitsap County

This year, Kitsap Transit is celebrating its 40th anniversary. From a row of five houses on Charleston Boulevard, to a county-spanning bus and ferry system, we’re proud to have served the residents of Kitsap County since 1983. The history of transit in the West Sound predates KT by many years, however. We’ve put together a timeline of Kitsap Transit, the ups and downs the agency experienced over the years, and our plans for the future.
