Headways Newsletter: May 2022
We’re back! Is it summer yet? No? Maybe?
While you wait for overdue sunshine, here’s our May newsletter, which is chock-full of goodies. Kitsap Transit has been busy this spring: We broke ground on a new transit center, rolled out public outreach campaigns for our Long-Range Transit Plan and Seattle Fast Ferry Terminal Project, supported the launch of a new ORCA card system and honored a long-time driver for his good deeds. Whew!

1. Breaking ground on a new Silverdale Transit Center
On May 19, Kitsap Transit held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of construction on a new transit center off Ridgetop Boulevard in Silverdale. Gov. Jay Inslee and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Administrator Nuria Fernandez joined Kitsap Transit board members to highlight the transit center, which will be the first in Western Washington to feature underground inductive charging technology for electric buses.
2. Long-Range Transit Plan: Shape the future of public transit in Kitsap County
When you think of the future of public transportation, what comes to mind?
Kitsap Transit is working to answer that question through our Long-Range Transit Plan, a tool that helps us guide our growth and investments over the next 20 years. Your feedback is a key part of developing the Plan and helping us decide which transit projects we should prioritize. Read the blog post and then take our survey to help out! Survey closes May 31.
3. New ORCA system launched May 16
The new ORCA system launched May 16 at transit agencies around the Puget Sound, offering riders a bunch of helpful new features. We put together a handy checklist to help you get started.
4. Summer Fast Ferry sailing schedules begin June 4
Say it with me: Summer sailings are back! Fast ferries will run all day on Saturdays beginning June 4. Check out our blog post for schedules.
5. ACCESS operator honored for assisting missing person on Christmas Eve
On May 3, Kitsap Transit’s Board of Commissioners recognized ACCESS operator Gary Young for his heroic actions on Christmas Eve last year, when he assisted an elderly man who had been reported missing.
6. Seattle Fast Ferry Terminal Project public comment period open now
Let’s face it: Pier 50 is crowded. Kitsap Transit’s fast ferries have to keep a tight schedule to ensure they can dock at one of the two available slips at Colman Dock. This project will study alternatives for a new fast ferry facility in Seattle. Read on for more details about how you can weigh in.
